smoke freeThe Grey Bruce Health Unit celebrates World No Tobacco Day, May 31, by marking the 10th anniversary of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA). In 2006, the Act banned smoking in indoor public places and gradually expanded to help further protect us where we work and play. Today there are many places where we are no longer exposed to dangerous second-hand smoke.

"It is only a matter time before children have no memory of smoking in public places, tobacco power-walls or smoking on playgrounds and sports fields," says Dr. Hazel Lynn, Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health.

To celebrate the anniversary Public Health recognized twelve champions who have made significant contributions in the local effort to reduce tobacco use. Tobacco-Free Champions awards were presented to individuals, organization and municipalities for their efforts that included championing change or role modelling activities in the areas of smoke-free spaces, innovative cessation programming, engaging youth and tobacco-free education. We applaud these Champions for the significant contribution they have made to support reducing the use of tobacco in Grey Bruce.

Public Health continues to offer support and free nicotine replacement therapy to those interested in quitting smoking. If you are interested in quitting or would like more information on the SFOA, please contact us at 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 or log on to our website and click on smoke-free living.
