Jason Davenport has been named Manager, Centre for Marine Training and Research at the Owen Sound Campus of Georgian College. Davenport is a graduate of the Marine Technology Navigation diploma program and also holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario.

Most recently, Davenport was a Navigation Officer for Algoma Central Corporation. Previously, he worked for Harren & Partner as Chief Officer on board the expedition ship Hanse Explorer. Davenport has sailed to more than 20 different countries and crossed six of the world's seven oceans.

Davenport has extensive professional sales experience in the financial and insurance industries, including roles at Manulife Financial, Manulife Bank and Walton Capital. At Sun Life Financial, he was the number one Wealth Manager for sales in British Columbia and second in Canada in 2009. Davenport was also a Junior Achievement of Canada volunteer business advisor – mentoring young people, and helping them set and achieve their business goals.

In recognition of excellence and his commitment to the industry, Davenport has received numerous awards including

§ Marine Club awards for being the best first, second and third-year cadet

§ 2014 Georgian College Co-op Student of the Year Award

§ 2014 International Shipmasters Award

§ 2013 and 2014 Algoma Central Marine Award

§ and the 2013 Company of Master Mariners of Canada Award.

"Jason's impressive business record, coupled with his mariner's credentials and passion for the industry, will help us continue to put the Centre for Marine Training and Research on the map."

Davenport begins his new position on Monday, Aug. 17.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help define the bright future of the Centre for Marine Training and Research at Georgian College," he says. "With the recent announcement of funding for the state-of-the-art Marine Emergency Duties Training and Research Centre, it's an exciting time to be part of industry training."
