C3 105mmHowitzer 4CDTCMeaford 03The sounds of war will be in the air tomorrow night as a Canadian Forces artillery unit runs out the big guns in live fire exercises on the Meaford range.

The exercises represent more than essential practice for the unit. The stories of our neighbours who have been coming to Canada for decades, seeking refuge from armies of conquest and defence, amplify the sonic shockwaves that will be propogated off the peninsula. They ran from these noises, ran for their lives.

The stories of our Veterans, untold but deeply remembered, will echo into the night sky, creating a soundshape our culture needs to hear.

These are sober, serious sounds. From the soldier commanding her unit on the gunnery range tomorrow, to our neighbours who ran and walked thousands of kilometres fleeing their homes never to return, to the Ukrainians seeking refuge in our city, to our Veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion and our Veterans who choose no association, these sounds bring determination, sorrow and horror.

Simultaneous firing of large-calibre guns from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. may be heard as far away as Hwy. 400 on the east side of Georgian Bay, depending on wind direction and weather.

The Commanding Officer of the 4th Canadian Division Training Center (4 CDTC) shares this media release:
