Griffith Lighthouse

- Hub staff

We have received reports of a fire last night on Griffith Island in Georgian Bay. A number of buildings and vehicles may be damaged or lost. We will provide official information as it is received.

From the website of the Griffith Island Club:

"The Griffith Island Club is a non-profit club dedicated to sport shooting. Club members enjoy ownership of the island’s magnificent 2,300+ acres situated on Georgian Bay near Owen Sound, Ontario. With a long and storied history stretching back to the landing there by Samuel de Champlain in 1609, Griffith Island has provided centuries of adventure for its inhabitants and visitors alike.

"Since 1973, the Club has been maintained as an exclusive sport shooting facility and social retreat for some 65 – 70 members."

The Griffith Island Club recently received an extension to their deer-hunting season to 13 weeks (open season is two weeks long for most of the rest of Ontario). The extension was opposed by the Ontario Federation of Hunters and Anglers, and Iinvestigative journalists at the Narwhal followed up with this story.
