Ontario Provincial Police LogoThe Ontario Provincial Police, South Bruce detachment were dispatched to an address on Cayley Street in Walkerton for a report of an attempted fraud.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2019, a member of the South Bruce OPP spoke with a senior and learned that she had received a phone call indicating that she had won a car. The senior did not provide any money to the scammers and spoke to a neighbour about the incident. The neighbour advised the senior it was indeed a scam and to contact South Bruce OPP.

South Bruce OPP want to ensure that everyone is aware that the scammers are always coming up with new ways to implement scams, making them look/sound as real as possible. Scammers often target seniors and will advise the senior that they have won a prize through but that they must pay an upfront fee to release the winnings. No winnings will ever be received.

How to Protect Yourself?

Known lotteries and sweepstakes will never request money to release a prize
Any phone call that you receive stating that you have won the lottery is fake!
To participate in a foreign lottery you must attend the country of origin and purchase a ticket in person
Do not share personal or financial information with anyone you have just met online or in person
Never under any circumstance send money for any reason
