Community Foundation Grey Bruce is now accepting online applications from qualified non-profit organizations and charities across Grey and Bruce Counties for project and program grants up to $5,000. The deadline to complete an application is September 30th.
The focus for this fall grant intake will be concentrated mainly on support of disadvantaged children and families. As well, modest funding is available to support minor sports in the smaller communities outside of Owen Sound and for the improvement of women's health in Grey and Bruce Counties.

This article was first published in my Orange Crate column in the Sun Times when Owen Sounder Jason Crone was on his way to the 2012 Paralympics in London. The local wheelchair rugby player and the Canadian team won silver at those games, and Crone subsequently retired from the national team, but he has returned to compete for Canada in the Toronto ParaPanam games. Semi-finals and finals will be August 13 and 14.
Jason Crone was a fifteen year old defenceman when his neck was broken in a minor hockey game in 2003. Before he was even allowed to sit up in rehab, he was introduced to the sport of wheelchair rugby, and some of its champions were introduced to him. By the fall of 2005 he was playing, but the family's deal was that he had to finish high school. Deal done, he was training with the national practice team and set himself the goal of playing for Canada at the Beijing Paralympics. In a 2010 interview Jason said "Having the CANADA across my chest is one of the biggest honours I can imagine...just a great feeling". The bronze medal around his neck must have felt pretty good too.

Dear Editor
The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), Owen Sound and Area, took the time and made the effort to bring to our M.P.'s attention that the 2015 Federal Budget did not have much content that addressed the needs of women.
CFUW's mandate is to improve the lives of women and girls, especially through making education, job opportunities, contraception and child care financially and physically accessible.
Concerning education, CFUW explained the need for more Transfer Payments to the Provinces, earmarked for post-secondary education, resulting in lower fees for students. The M.P.'s office did not reply to this request but skirted the issue by describing the amount of money that the federal government is transferring to the provinces and that 'it will continue to grow moving forward.'. Not a satisfactory or relevant reply. The other measures, including the Red Seal and Blue Seal Apprenticeship Certification deal with heavy equipment training, the trades, and are mostly male oriented. Not a good example.
There was no specificity in the reply to our request for measures to ensure the economic security of women.
We had a very specific request concerning public housing, that Housing First's (a program to provide housing for homeless people) financial support not decrease funding for Women's Shelters. The response was ...

Police are asking residents to keep their porch lights on tonight, lock sheds, and not give anyone with bad intentions a place to hide. They are looking for the person or persons responsible for a string of fires in downtown Owen Sound last nights, and they do not yet have a suspect. Chief Sornberger asked that residents be vigilant and call 911 if anything looks or sounds the least bit suspicious.
The fires locations included a shed, a townhouse complex, detached homes and the MacKay building. There is no indication at this time that anyone was targeted in what is now being treated as arson.
Ten people were sent to hospital, but all have been discharged. The police chief credited emergency services ...
