The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) National office has just released its analysis of the recent federal budget. CFUW, Owen Sound and Area Club's response is the following edited and abridged version of that three-page analysis.
BUDGET 2015 WHAT'S IN IT FOR WOMEN?
This year's budget is heavy on tax benefits, as well as additional support for women
entrepreneurs and women in the corporate sector.
WOMEN'S ECONOMIC SECURITY
There are no specific initiatives to promote job creation for women or enhance their
economic security. There is little investment for low-income women.
EDUCATION
CFUW points out the need for the federal government to increase its investment in
post-secondary education to 0.56% of GDP, and specifically earmark those funds to
transfer payments to provinces and territories. This action will help defray university
operating costs and help universities reduce tuition fees.
Gonorrhea rates are on the rise both locally and throughout the country. Grey Bruce has seen a more than 300% increase, from six cases in 2013 to 25 in 2014.
Contributing to this increase is the proliferation of online websites that cater to anonymous sexual contact. Public Health reminds the public to use safe sexual practices. Those who are participating in high risk behaviours, such as anonymous sexual contact, those who have multiple partners and unprotected sex should visit their doctor routinely, at least every six months, for testing of sexually transmitted infections.
Unifor Local 4268, the union representing school bus and transit drivers in Owen Sound and City transit contractor First Student Canada ULC are currently engaged in labour negotiations. The City of Owen Sound has received a 72-hour notice of strike action effective 12:01 a.m. Sunday May, 24, 2015 if a mutually agreeable Memorandum of Agreement has not been reached by that time.
Should such a strike occur then both Conventional and Specialized Transit services in Owen Sound would be suspended for the duration of the job action.
