It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Shirley Kennedy McArthur, born July 9, 1936. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 27, 2022.

Fran was a vital and talented woman, a gifted musician and pianist, a poet, an inspiring teacher, and a dedicated supporter of and advocate for the theatre, arts and music communities in Owen Sound. As a teacher Fran touched the lives of many thousands of students, sharing her deep love of literature, of reading, of writing and her irrepressible love of learning.

On foot, and in all seasons she explored countless miles of North Sydenham, carving her own path through field, forest and alongside rivers, finding deep spiritual connection in the natural world. Fran was the beloved wife and co-conspirator in life of the late Jim McArthur. So many were welcomed with open arms and generous spirit into their schoolhouse home at Briar Hill, Annan.

Fran is remembered with love by a large circle of friends and family. Her memory is honoured by her sister Mary Smith, her daughters, Lee and Keira McArthur, her grandchildren Dominie McGruer, Max, Ben and Anna von Holtzendorff, her great-grandchildren, Bastian, Felix and Guinevere and many, many extended family. Fran will be missed by all who knew her; her passing ripples deep in the lives of her loved ones. We are bereft.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined. Thank you for considering making a donation in memory of Fran, through the Bruce Trail Conservancy, towards land acquisition in the Sydenham section of the trail.
