A quiet little city in Southwestern Ontario, Owen Sound may appear to the outside world to be a collection of dissimilar purposes held together by geography and good intentions. Is it a tourist destination? An industrial town? A retirement community? An arts enclave? A cultural centre?
Owen Sound is all of those things, and more. But on Monday morning, while the smoke of those recent fires continued to pile up into the sky of a new and terrible day, Owen Sound again showed what it really is. One solid community.
By 5AM the mayor was up and on the ground assisting stalwart firefighters. Police too were on scene, working hard to extinguish the potential for more damage just as surely as the firefighters were working hard to extinguish the blazes of 15 households.
Commuters waited patiently in streets already overcrowded from construction elsewhere, that now were made more congested by the closing of streets for emergency crews to work as they exhausted themselves in the containing and dousing of the conflagrations.
By the next day, Tuesday, the first sounds of a benefit event being planned were heard, with more to follow. How could one benefit possibly be enough, our city seemed to sense without discussion that more would be needed. By Friday the first ...
Congratulations to the Owen Sound Police Services for their quick work in apprehending the arson suspects. Officers came in on days off, from sick leave and holidays for 18-hour shifts to get the job done!
Having practiced criminal law for several years, I have full confidence in our justice system and our Crown Attorney's office in Grey County to deal with these matters.
We are all angry, but this is not the time to think of revenge.

The third suspect in the August 10th arson spree in Owen Sound has been arrested.
Yesterday an arrest warrant was issued for 26 year old Donald "Donny" Kelly WILSON, for 17 counts of Arson – Disregard for Human Life, 6 counts of Arson to Property, 1 count of Break and Enter.

Recent reports have identified Beth Ezekiel Synagogue as one of the “targets of opportunity” in Monday night's arson spree allegedly perpetrated by three now known persons.
But in a weird twist of fate, as sometimes happens, this target was a failure for the arsonists in two ways.
First, their attempt to start a bush on fire at the historic synagogue failed, extinguishing itself before any damage to real property could be affected.
And secondly, due to a grant from SIIP (Security Infrastructure Improvement Program) that was given to improve security for groups that may be targeted by hate crimes, police ended up with some video that may have been instrumental in identifying those arrested for the crime and the one still being sought.

The Owen Sound Police Service has identified a third suspect responsible for the spree of arsons on August 10th, 2015.
An arrest warrant has been obtained for the arrest of an Owen Sound male. Twenty-six year old Donald "Donny" Kelly WILSON is wanted for 17 counts of Arson – Disregard for Human Life, 6 counts of Arson to Property, 1 count of Break and Enter.
Investigators are following up on information that WILSON may have fled Owen Sound to the Wiarton or Bruce Peninsula area.
Donald WILSON is described as: a 26 year old Caucasian male, 5'11" tall, 160 lbs, thin build, with brown medium length hair, hazel eyes.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Donald WILSON is asked to immediately contact police in their jurisdiction.
