Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, is pleased with a recent announcement by the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, wherein the Minister announced the coming into force of two provisions under the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act.
Effective September 2nd, 2015, the following changes to the Firearms Act will come into force:
- The elimination of the Possession Only Licence (POL) and conversion of all existing POLs to Possession and Acquisition Licenses (PALs);
- The Authorization to Transport (ATT) becoming a condition of licence for certain routine and lawful activities.
The elimination of the POL and conversion of all existing POLs to PALs will simplify the firearms licensing regime by eliminating one type of licence for adults. Specifically, it will provide the roughly 530,000 holders of POLs with acquisition privileges, formerly reserved for PAL holders.

Wondering what to expect at a Contra Dance?
by James Keelaghan
Several years ago, I was teaching at a music camp in New Jersey. I had a group of about 16 songwriters as students. On the first night they invited me down to a songwriters' circle at one of the cabins. I went, stayed for one round through the circle, and said my "good nights". I then went and played for two hours with the contra dance band.
The next day, they asked what I thought about the circle. My inner Canadian was still asleep and instead of being polite, I said what was on my mind.
Mr Miller responded to comments I made in the press recently regarding the impact of the Trans-Pacific Parternship trade talks on Bruce Grey farmers; however, he seems to have misread or misheard what I said. For example, I did not say free trade was against Canadian interests. We in the NDP believe trade with other countries is very much in our interest. However, I did ask our MP whether the TPP would hurt some of our farmers in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
Mr Miller's answer is an emphatic: "Trust us."
Hmmm ... I seem to remember promises of Senate reform and getting Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau instead. And veterans coming home wounded only to be snubbed by a Cabinet Minister. I remember commitments to bring well-paying jobs to communities outside Alberta. And I see a 'Universal' Child Care Benefit glad-handed out before the election only to be taxed into a pittance after.
If our government won't tell us what they're doing, we are forced to rely on news reports and economic analysis. According to those, some from other countries, Canada will have to give up supply management to get a deal. There seems very little doubt about that.
The Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services have left the scene of a fire that occurred in the corridor of the 2nd floor of Victoria Towers, 825 9th Street West. The fire which began in an electrical panel was contained to the area around the panel.
The building owners now have care of the building. The hallway lighting, stairwell lighting and elevator are all operating. Power to the apartments will not be provided until the damaged panel has been replaced. The building owners have posted a fire watch on site until the fire alarm system has been repaired. The units are equipped with battery powered smoke alarms.
Crich Holdings who own the building have an electrician on site working on getting the electrical repairs completed. The Electrical Safety Authority is on site.
