Is everything you see, read and hear in the news 'true'? Does the news simply 'reflect' the world as it is? Or is our 'view' of the world shaped by it? Does it matter? In a special lecture entitled "Is Perspective Everything? News, Bias, Reality – From Telegraph to Twitter", Dr. Herbert Pimlott addresses these questions as he explores a relationship that has been at the core of how our society works: the relationship between journalism and democracy.
The City of Owen Sound Public Works will be restricting traffic on 10th Street West from 1st Avenue East to 2nd Avenue West to one lane in each direction for watermain repairs. This temporary lane closure will be in effect until later in the week.
Traffic can use 9th Street West hill to avoid 10th Street West congestion until the watermain repairs are completed.
On Thursday, April 16th the Tom Thomson Art Gallery (The TOM) will hold a public and member consultation meeting to present the "Case for Incorporation and Expansion" including a proposed Business Plan 2015-2020 that supports an expanded community visual arts centre.
The meeting will take place at the Bayshore Centre from 5pm to 6:30pm. The public and TOM members are welcome to attend.

Most of the "sexier" news from council has already been covered on The Hub – the passionate deputations by Aly Boltman about Branningham Grove, the launch of Mix Well, an anthology of local poetry, and the details of water billing for those whose water service was interrupted by frozen pipes and mains.
Other subjects were covered in the course of Monday night's meeting, chaired by Deputy Mayor Arlene Wright in the absence of Mayor Ian Boddy who was out on the sick list.

A couple of weeks ago, when our city's name could be found in news articles around the world, I asked my Owen Sound friends a question over Facebook. I wanted to know why we leave, stay, and come back to our city. The responses were typical of small towns across Canada. We leave for education and work. We stay away when the work and lifestyles we aspire to can only be found in different places. We come back for love of people and place. As much as Owen Sound's latest tag line -- "where you want to live" -- has been ridiculed, there's truth in it but we need to ask why exactly that is before we can spread the word...
