Susan Haldane, formerly a reporter for several Grey County newspapers, will be in Owen Sound  September 8 to read from her new book of poetry, Hard Bargain Road. The reading is part of the  Oh!Sound reading series hosted by Owen Sound poet laureate Rico Sitoski.

Haldane grew up in Grey County and worked for the Meaford Express, Thornbury Review-Herald, and  the Owen Sound Sun Times. She now lives and farms with her husband in northern Ontario. Haldane brings a journalist’s eye to her poetry, telling stories of the rural community, the evolution of the land  and the challenges of farming in the Anthropocene.

reporterpoetHard Bargain Road is published by Gaspereau Press in Nova Scotia. The publisher describes the book as  direct and plain-spoken: “This collection recalls the frank wistful and stubborn persistence of a bluegrass  hymn, a song for a community that will not be defined from without.”

The reading September 8 will take place in the auditorium of the Owen Sound Public Library at 7 p.m. Haldane will also read and discuss the background to her book on September 10 at the L.E. Shore Library  in Thornbury.

Hard Bargain Road is available at Jessica’s Books in Thornbury, or from Gaspereau Press.
