Not only is it the title of one of RPR's most emotionally charged songs, it also accurately characterizes the Owen Sound-based band's upcoming concert at Heartwood Hall in Owen Sound.
Anyone who remembers their previous sold-out appearance at Heartwood a year and a half ago will be delighted to hear they're coming back on Friday, March 3rd.
Keyboardist Rob Ritchie, bass player Al Parrish, guitarist Steve Ritchie and percussionist/singer/songwriter Beaker Granger created RPR in 2012.
Rob, Al and Steve were part of Tanglefoot, who with 13 UK tours and countless runs across Canada and the US, enjoyed a stellar international reputation in the folk/roots music scene, winning Best Vocal Group at the 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards. 2009 saw the retirement of Tanglefoot, but the drive to perform reasserted itself in the tight, energetic and expansive band that is RPR.
"We used to talk about percussion, back in the day," said Steve. "Our music was always so rhythmic and punchy. It wouldn't have suited the sound of the old band, but once we started thinking about doing something new we got pretty excited about bringing percussion into the mix. Keeping some of the same approaches but adding a new element always sparks creativity."
Impressive vocal harmony is one thread that persists. "I can't imagine playing in a band where vocal harmony isn't a centerpiece,"Steve continued. "Nothing has the impact of really big, tight harmony singing."
Another aspect of RPR's sound is what might be termed their impressive range. "One of my favourite comments came after a show in Yorkshire. This fellow said he felt we played with a terrific use of light and shade. I really liked that because what we strive for in this band is the ability to play not only big and wide, but also small as a whisper. We want you to feel it in your chest one moment and then disappear into the mist the next."
You can see for yourself on Friday, March 3rd at Heartwood Hall in Owen Sound. The concert starts at 8 pm.
Tickets are available at Heartwood Homes and at the Bean Cellar in Owen Sound, Josie's of Wiarton, and at Rice's Home Hardware in Meaford. Tickets are also available online here.
