Once again, the Owen Sound Art Banner Society has put out a call to local talent to enter their work into the Annual Juried Exhibition. Imagine - an open-air gallery in a fabulous location, an opportunity to exhibit your artwork for an entire year, and absolutely no application fee. This contest, judged by three local jurors, is one of the most inclusive art competitions anywhere. There appears to be a limitless supply of talent in the GreyBruce area, with the banner competition now in its ninth year.
The best kind of images to submit are colourful, high resolution and vertically oriented. Open to anyone living in Grey-Bruce, there are three categories in which to submit: adults (whether professional or amateur), children aged 13 and under, and Group of Special Artists (persons who have developmental differences). The deadline is March 15, 2018 and all the information you need to submit your art images is on the website www.owensoundartbanner.ca.
There is no need to worry about your work being destroyed by the elements, as the chosen pieces will be printed on high quality vinyl to be hung around the harbour for the summer. In winter, through partnership with the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and the City of Owen Sound, the banners are exhibited in the Public Library, and in store-front windows on Owen Sound's main street.
The banner launch is always held on the Sunday of the Doors Open weekend at the Owen Sound Farmer's Market (June 3, 2018). At that event, all the chosen banners will be displayed together, giving the public a chance to sponsor a banner of their choice for a cost of $100. At the end of the display year, the banner becomes the property of the person who sponsored it. The sponsorships are what keep this project running year after year, covering the cost of printing these high quality pieces of art.
