tomOn Friday, September 28, 2018 from 7PM – 9PM, join the staff of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery as they celebrate the opening of three new fall exhibitions: Community Curators, Carl Beam: Dreaming Ourselves as Each Other, and Medium. Additionally, on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1PM the Gallery will be hosting a TOM Talk featuring Guest Curator, Anong Beam.

On Friday evening, the TOM welcomes all to attend the official openings of these new exhibitions. Doors will open at 7PM with opening remarks beginning at 7:15PM. Admission to this event is free. The Gallery would like to acknowledge Tamming Law for their generous donation of food and refreshments for this reception.

Community Curators marks the return of the ever popular showcase of favourite works from the Gallery's Collection as selected by local businesses and members of the public from the Grey-Bruce region. This year's exhibition includes several never before seen works from the Gallery's Collection. All proceeds from this exhibition were donated directly to the care of the Gallery's Collection.

Carl Beam: Dreaming Ourselves as Each Other is guest curated by Anong Beam. In this exhibition, Anong Beam, an artist and curator of the M'Chigeeng First Nation (Manitoulin Island), curates early oil paintings by her father, Carl Beam, providing audiences with an up-close interpretation of his works – both from a contemporary Indigenous curatorial context and from a daughter's personal perspective. The exhibition will include some of the artist's works held in the Gallery's Collection and will critically address the Indigenous experience in Canada and the influence of Jewish culture and history on Beam's future work.

Medium, curated by the Gallery's Collections Assistant, Heather McCorquodale explores the evolution of photography as an artistic medium through select works from the Gallery's Collection.

The celebrations continue on Saturday with a special TOM Talk lead by Anong Beam. This talk begins at 1PM in the Gallery's community engagement and studio space. Anong will lead a discussion on her father's work and influences. Admission to this talk is free, all are welcome.
