To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing the orchestra will perform Dvorak’s New World Symphony. This will be part of the “From Shostakovich to the New World” concert on Saturday March 30 at East Ridge School. Neil Armstrong took a recording of the New World Symphony with him on his Apollo 11 rocket that landed in the Sea of Tranquility on the 20 June 1969. It is said that Armstrong was listening to this piece as he stepped on to the lunar surface. The New World Symphony is one the best know works in classical music and is Dvorak’s most popular pieces.

The Symphony is pleased to also present multiple award winning Canadian pianists, Vivian Chen to perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concert No. 2. Chen is originally for Ottawa and studied performance at the University of Toronto. She had her Carnegie Hall debut in 2017. She won a bronze medal that same year at the Vancouver International Music Competition and had won first price the previous year in the Canadian Music Completion. Chen has performed all over Ontario and has performed in the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.

As part of the orchestra’s support of Canadian composers the concert will start with a short piece by Ontario composer Tyler Versluis.
