Hockey night in Canada is coming to Owen Sound, Sunday evening January 4, 2015, as the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour hosts a National Hockey League broadcast from our city! What better time to check out some hockey books, meet authors who write about hockey, watch a hockey movie, and enjoy a special hockey pre-school story time? You can do it all at the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library.
On Monday, January 5 at 6:00 pm, join journalist and author Jonathon Jackson for a closer look at his book, The Making of Slap Shot: Behind the Scenes of the Greatest Hockey Movie Ever Made and a screening of the movie that started it all: Slap Shot. The evening will begin with an introduction from Jackson and a viewing of the movie, followed by a discussion.
On the morning of Tuesday, January 6 at 10:30 am we have a program for the youngest hockey fans out there. Children aged 0-6 and their caregivers are invited to join us for a special hockey-themed preschool story time with stories and songs and a craft all about our favourite game.
Later on Tuesday at 7:00 pm, join writer Stephen Smith in discussion about his book, Puckstruck. Puckstruck has been called "the best book of 2014" on greatesthockeylegends.com. Roy MacGregor has said it should be "required reading for every 'hockey insider' analyst and barstool GM in ice country." An award-winning reporter, Smith has contributed to the Globe and Mail, Canadian Geographic, Quill & Quire, and the New York Times Magazine. Puckstruck is his first book.
On Wednesday, January 7 at 10:00 am, join prolific hockey writer Eric Zweig for a discussion about his most recent books and a look at the life of a sports writer. To date, Zweig has published over 20 non-fiction books on hockey for children. His latest books are The Big Book of Hockey for Kids and the Hockey Hall of Fame series which includes Dominant Defensemen, Super Scorers and Great Goalies.
