Join the City of Owen Sound for a physically distanced celebration as we recognize 100 years of incorporation as a City.
On Saturday, December 5, Rogers TV will be airing a 100th Anniversary Special on Rogers TV capped off by a spectacular fireworks show. The show will feature performances from local musician Larry Jensen and Poet Laureate Richard Yves-Sitoski as well as pre-recorded interviews with former Owen Sound Mayors Deborah Haswell, Ruth Lovell-Stanners, Stew Taylor, and Ovid Jackson as they discuss fond memories of their time in office. Local historian, author, and Councillor Richard Thomas will also be on hand to share some of Owen Sound’s storied history. Mayor Ian Boddy will cap off the hour-long show and introduce the celebratory fireworks, being set off from Victoria Park at 7:00 p.m.
Due to gathering and safety restrictions, people wishing to watch the fireworks in-person will not be permitted at Victoria Park or the Julie McArthur Recreation Centre. Instead, the City has outlined alternative locations where the fireworks should be visible. These locations, include the Harry Lumley Bayshore parking lot, Duncan McLellan Park, and Heritage Place Mall parking lot. These locations provide space for people to enjoy the fireworks from their vehicles, to maintain physical distancing.
Residents can also view the fireworks in the following ways:
- On Rogers TV Channel 53
- On Rogers TV Grey County
- City’s Official Facebook Page
“Celebrating a Century”, a self-guided, augmented reality tour of Owen Sound’s history is set up along 1st Avenue East with the Festival of North Lights. Simply scan any of the eight posters with your smartphone camera to bring up a short video that highlights a specific time in Owen Sound’s history. From its incorporation in 1920 to where we are today, this exhibit will give locals and visitors a look into the last 100 years in Owen Sound.
"We are excited to be celebrating 100 years of incorporation as a City. In a year where we have missed out on so many celebrations, I am glad that we can come together as a community in a new and different way. I encourage everyone to tune into the 100th Anniversary Special and enjoy the performances, interviews, and fireworks," says Mayor Ian Boddy.
