The City of Owen Sound has been notified by Southbridge Care Homes that they will not continue with their plans to redevelop the former Courthouse and Jail building.
"After an extensive review of the needs of the Owen Sound area it became clear the Courthouse location was too constrictive and would not accommodate the requirements of an expanded facility," said Southbridge CEO Keith McIntosh. "Southbridge is now pursuing a larger location in Owen Sound which will better suit a more extensive development. Southbridge continues to be committed to Owen Sound and looks forward to working with City Council to bring this project to fruition."
Southbridge explored a number of design options but were ultimately unable to accommodate the space required for a modern long-term care facility at the Courthouse. Plans involve establishing a community care hub, including a long-term care home, supportive services, and administrative offices.
"We are grateful to Keith and Southbridge for maintaining open communications during this investigation period," said Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy. "At this point, we are focusing on the silver-lining of future potential and look forward to continuing our positive working relationship with Southbridge. As the Courthouse failed to offer the size required for this hub-project, we are excited about options elsewhere in Owen Sound."
City Council will address the status of the former Courthouse and Jail at a meeting in the near future.
