The current pandemic is upsetting the apple cart. The latest issue is whether to return to a per vote subsidy because political fundraising is suffering. The fact is that this is the only fair way that every voter can have equal influence in the outcome of an election. It is generally recognized that the more money you spend at election time, the more votes you will get. The more private donations you receive, the more you will have to spend spend. Here’s how it works. I donate $400 each year to my local riding association. Because I pay federal tax I get $300 back. That $400 dollars spent during an election campaign will be subsidized by the government to the tune of $240. Look at it! I put out a hundred dollars ($400-$300) and my party reaps $640. No wonder the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
