Owen Sound voters meet council candidates

Owen Sound council candidates face the voters Thursday night
during the all-candidates meeting at the Bayshore Centre.

Candidates for Owen Sound council introduced themselves to voters at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre Thursday night.

More than 150 filled the centre's Rutherford Hall for short speeches by the candidates, followed by written questions from the audience and the sponsoring Owen Sound and District Chamber of Commerce.

Mayoral candidates Ian Boddy and Richard Thomas and deputy mayoral candidates Scott Greig and Brian O'Leary joined council candidates Jeffrey Caldwell, Travis Dodd, Alan Douglas, Jon Farmer, Robert Galbraith, Brock Hamley, Marion Koepke, Suneet Kukreja, Carol Merton, Melanie Middlebro', Meghan Robertson and Jasmine Schnarr on the dias. Council candidate Michelle Tompkins was unable to attend.

Owen Sound Mayor

The Mayor in Owen Sound sits on both City Council and County Council. The role of Mayor as head of council is:

to act as the municipality's chief executive officer;
to preside over council meetings such that business is carried out both efficiently and effectively;
to provide leadership to the council;
to provide information/recommendations to council on policies, practices, procedures;
to ensure transparency and accountability; and
to represent the municipality at official functions.

Owen Sound Deputy Mayor

The Deputy Mayor in Owen Sound sits on both City Council and County Council. The Deputy Mayor assists the Mayor in carrying out their powers and duties and act in the place of the Mayor when the Mayor is absent, refuses to act or declares a pecuniary interest or when the role is vacant.
