bus stop 1516549 640

For anyone who travels to or from the Saugeen Shores area to Toronto, one of our family members was notified while on the TOK bus line (Southampton to Toronto) that it will no longer have any stops past the Toronto International Airport in two weeks time. You will not be able to be travel into the city to Union Station on this bus line. The driver stated this TOK route is already operating at a loss.

This got me thinking about our lack of transportation locally as well, after reading about Tim Horton's (and other businesses) having to cut back their hours of service due to staff shortages. With projections that Saugeen Shores will have a population larger than Owen Sound in a matter of a few years (about 24,000) does it not seem foolhardy not to address people mover issues? If someone is making insufficient wages to afford to live in our community, they certainly cannot afford to own a vehicle to travel to a job here from farther away. When people say, "nobody wants to work anymore" perhaps it's that they cannot commit to a job they cannot get to.

No solutions here, but when the AirBus announced their permanent closure, they mentioned that these types of services will need some subsidising in order to adequately provide this service.

Janice Coleman Sanagan, Southampton
