handtree I am so grateful for the people who have let their names stand to serve as mayor, deputy mayor, councillor or school board trustee in our city.

I hope the expanded options for casting votes will result in more residents participating in this important civic opportunity to set a path for the next four years in Owen Sound.

There are four incumbents and nine new people running for councillor. At least three council chairs will be occupied by first time councillors.

While each voter can vote for seven councillors, it is important to note that it is not necessary to choose seven.

In fact, by voting only for those who you most want representing you, you increase their chance of being selected.

It is important to keep in mind that it is more difficult for women to get elected and re-elected. The same is true for candidates from diverse backgrounds.

I will be casting my vote with a vision of Owen Sound council that reflects gender balance, a wide demographic and diversity that is enriching our community.

Show your gratitude for those willing to serve by making sure you vote.

Mary Anne Alton – Owen Sound
