These days, snow hides the shape of the land. Beside streets in town, where in summer there would be a lawn, there are cliffs cut by blowers and hills created by people with shovels. In the country, swells and sharp-edged drifts are laid down by wind, hiding ditches, rocks and fence rows. The world has a different shape, one that changes with each new day.
When it comes to alcohol, the more a person drinks, the higher the risk of cancer.
The link between alcohol and cancer is well recognized. Cancer Care Ontario reports alcohol caused up to 3,000 cases of cancer in Ontario in 2010. In Grey Bruce, 19 per cent of residents over the age of 12 are regular heavy drinkers. While there is no "safe" amount of alcohol in relation to a person's risk for cancer, the less alcohol you drink, the more you reduce your risk.

Last week, in the wake of inhuman violence, it was hard to be hopeful, hard to believe in the possibility of wholeness for our world community. While the attacks in Paris held the top of the news, people also experienced horrific violence in Yemen and Nigeria. Those near these attacks are grieving, in shock. For those not directly in the line of fire, this violence that targets civilians attacks our hope, our sense of personal security, our sympathetic understanding of others.
As part of National Non-Smoking Week, January 18-24, the Grey Bruce Health Unit encourages tobacco users to quit and possibly win a new car, cash or other prizes.
The Canadian Cancer Society's Driven to Quit Challenge offers participants, who stay smoke-free for the month of March, a chance to win a new car or one of seven $1,000 cash prizes.
The wouldurather... contest, designed specifically for young adults, offers two grand prizes of $2,500 to randomly selected contestants who successfully quit smoking.
