The darkness felt solid as I slipped into the church sanctuary without turning on the lights. I had not realized that the sun would have already set when I planned this time to do an observation exercise for my writing course.

I felt my way forward with my feet. I could see nothing but the high windows at the back of the building. The stained glass allowed a little light in from outside, so slowly I was able to see the shape of the walls and the patterns in the windows. The dark wood of the pews remained hidden, but eventually I could see the white vaulting arches of the ceiling.

Thanksgiving is a holiday I love. Family gathers for laughter and a chance to catch up. The kitchen is warmed by the oven, and the rich aroma of roasting turkey fills the air. Outside the cool air and brilliant leaves makes walking glorious. And after a busy September, the extra day off gives us an opportunity to slow down.

There is, however, a Thanksgiving tradition that I do not much like, and that is the idea that we need to stop and count our blessings. This action does not feel thankful to me.

infect-regInfection prevention and control is most effective wheneveryone makes the effort. If you want to 'stay ahead of the game' and minimize your risk of becoming ill, we encourage you to practice these quick and easy techniques:

  • Wash your hands
  • Get you flu shot annually and ensure your vaccinations are up to date
  • Cover your cough
  • Stay home when you are ill
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Think about a recent time when you were disappointed. Something did not work out the way you planned, the way you expected. What did you feel? A sharp pain or a sigh of regret?

Disappointment can be small - your regular coffee shop ran out of your favorite snack. It can be huge when a loved one does something that threatens to break your relationship or change your image of them forever. Always, disappointment comes when what is does not meet what we expect will be.

Many of these early fall days have been glorious. Warm sun on the face under the expanse of blue. Trees tipped with red. The swamp in front of our house vibrates and sings with the birds who are gathering for the flight south.
