There are lots of farm gate sales and porch exchanges that work on the honour system in Grey-Bruce. Owners farm or go to a job or school, and cannot be on-site all the time. Their systems have worked well for years.
But even with the addition of well-labelled security cameras, some dis-honourable people will not be deterred. One local resident posted the following in a Facebook group, and we've republished it here with their permission. Look after your neighbours - keep your eyes open if things look odd and keep a listen out for people who brag about getting away with things like this. This is a time you might want to use Crimestoppers.
"Tonight we had two very upset kiddos, and I say they were upset cause they earn half the money from our pumpkin stand that they help with.
We noticed stuff was gone so we went down to find a empty money box. Now we do understand it is self serve, and the honour system. So we needed to explain this to them that some people are not honest.
They just couldn't understand why someone would steal other people's stuff!. We do have camaras (which is says right on the sign) for this exact reason. If this keeps happening we won't be able to keep going.
But we please ask you to respect the honour system and if you were the person who took the mum, mini bales and a large pumpkin, please do the right thing and put the money in the jar."
