Motorcycle riders from across Grey Bruce take to the road Saturday, June 20 in the 14th annual Jean Farmer Motorcycle Ride for Arthritis. Bikers will go on a 165 kilometer route featuring some of the most spectacular scenic vistas the area has to offer!
Registration is from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Blue Water Curling Club, 651 19th St. E., Owen Sound. Minimum pledge for participants is $35.
The ride gets underway at 10:00 a.m. Bikes proceed at their own pace with a lunchtime barbeque, on route, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus. At stops along the route, riders get qualifying stamps for their poker hand. The ride wraps up back at Blue Water Curling Club for prizes.
The ride was re-named in 2013 in memory of the late Jean Farmer who was a patron of the ride and a participant well into her eighties.
In thirteen years, the Grey Bruce Motorcycle Ride for Arthritis has raised more than $77,000 for The Arthritis Society. Money assists research and local programs to support those living with arthritis. The event includes many contributions from community-minded supporters who provide a variety of prizes and donations. As well as the top prize for the best poker hand, there are many additional prizes, draws and a silent auction.
There are over 4.2 million Canadians living with arthritis. It is one of the leading causes of pain and physical disability in Canada. Grey Bruce has the second highest prevalence of arthritis in the province at 23.4% of people 12 years and over self-reporting. (Canadian Community Health Survey, Nov. 2010)
Sponsors for this year's Poker Run include Fox Harley-Davidson, East Side Mario's Restaurant and Debbie Aiken, The Co-operators. The Grey Bruce Chapter of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association is the participating motorcycle club.
