Local author Lili Anne (Georgas) Holding has written a new book which documents the history of the Greek community in Owen Sound from 1912 to 1932. Mythos (Greek for "story") describes the arrival of her grandmother, Sadie, from Greece in 1904 and follows the family from Ellis Island (New York) to Owen Sound.

In 1911, Sadie Scopis married Christos Georgas and they settled here to raise their ten children (one of whom was Lili Anne's father, Earl Georgas) and start a number of businesses including the Classic Theatre, which was located on 2nd Avenue East. Mythos also includes some favourite family recipes, including baklava, psomi (bread), and instructions for making feta, as well as a bibliography.

Lili Anne has spent many years researching her family and the impact they had on building Owen Sound. The Georgas' were instrumental in establishing the Greek community in their chosen home town, as well as throughout the province. The author has taken great care to accurately describe the history, embellished where necessary, into a fascinating account of one family's journey.

Mythos: Owen Sound's Greek Community 1912-1932 will be launched at 2:00pm Saturday September 18 at Heartwood Hall (939 2nd Avenue East). Due to COVID restrictions, attendees are asked to pre-register at (519) 376-4233. Copies of Mythos ($30) will be available at the launch as well as The Ginger Press.
