On Highway 26 just east of Meaford, neighbours are building a healthy community hub, a centre that "nourishes the growth of an active and engaged community". Called "The Barn Co-operative Network", it is transforming a traditional building once again into a space for a healthy future.
Building on the success of the original 100 Mile Market in Meaford, the Market has offered fresh, local and healthy food since 2011 in the "stables" of the original building. Now The Barn has diversified into a community co-operative – a space "to share, grow, learn and celebrate in a healthy environment". Besides the Market, the Barn houses the essential smoothie and coffee bar, featuring local Ironwood wood-fire roasted coffee, expanded retail space, the practice of a holistic nutritionist, an art gallery, a wired workspace which can be booked for extended periods or drop-ins, workshop spaces and a beautiful loft for yoga. There is still room to grow on the grounds of The Barn – space for outdoor workshops, gardens and community events.
The Barn Co-op has joined the fastest-growing socio-economic movement in the world. Canada alone has over ten thousand co-operatives and credit unions with over 18 million members. At the Barn, members are the owners - they choose the board of directors, receive special value on goods and services, and can also be investors. More information about The Barn, its vision, structure and membership is on their website, and Facebook will keep you up to date on all the latest.
The grand opening celebration for The Barn is Saturday, July 11 from 11 to 4, with a barbecue and ice cream, activities for children and live music featuring ET Rhino.
