Canada has made commitments to support refugees and displaced people fleeing war in Ukraine and Afghanistan. Grey Bruce residents and communities responded with generosity and successful action to welcome refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries in the past. Now we need to know what we can do in our region to prepare to help people who may come to Grey Bruce as a result of war in Ukraine and Afghanistan.
Welcoming Communities Grey Bruce is hosting a virtual workshop, A Safe Place: Preparing to Support Refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan, on Wednesday March 30th 7:00 – 9:00pm, to provide information and opportunities for sharing and questions.
The workshop will include presentations from local experts to explore questions, including:
1. What is the government of Canada doing to support refugees and people fleeing war and to enable them to come to Canada? What are the requirements and pathways for refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine when they come to Canada?
2. How can Grey Bruce residents support refugees and displaced people who wish to settle in Grey Bruce?
What can we do and what are refugees likely to need?
3. What settlement and supports services do we have in Grey Bruce to help refugees and newcomers fleeing from Ukraine and Afghanistan? How do we help refugees fleeing war, wherever they are?
There will also be a question and answer period, discussion, and next steps.
