I stayed in a place in Owen Sound not even as luxurious as the one that has gone viral in Toronto  - at least bedframes, sheets, pillows and chair provided there!  From June to Sept '21 I paid $600/month for a small room in the basement of a bungalow. I negotiated to pay by the month, avoiding signing a year lease which was "required".

This is not Owen Sound. Ths is the basement room in Toronto that was advertised for $420 per month per bed. 

3 people, International students from India studying Power Engineering at Georgian College and working night shifts at Zehrs, Circle K, and Dairy Queen, slept in 1 small basement room next to my room.

Only 3 single mattresses on the floor and 1 desk provided.

1 tiny bathroom with no ventilation, tiny cracked, discoloured mirror and a clogged, standup shower for 5 people living in the 3 basement rooms. I was the only woman.

No air-conditioning provided. Industrial carpet covered drain holes in basement floor/bedroom floors and black mold and bugs were rampant in the basement.

The upper floor had 5 to 7 people at various times, again sharing rooms. No TV access provided.
1 kitchen, (always in complete disaster and filthy) 1 unhygienic, unventilated bathroom upstairs. Flies everywhere.

The landlord lived somewhere in the GTA. Never saw him. He also owned the bungalow next door, also rented rooms and house under same and in ways worse conditions.

No plowing provided during winter of 3 driveways combined, even though some tenants had cars and worked for food delivery services.

Nothing else at all available. I had been looking and pursuing rooms and landlords for 6 months. Covid lockdowns throughout this period also made room rentals impossible.

For this location, which was a 25 min walking distance one-way to my work at Tim Hortons, I pushed through desperately to retain a room in this residence as a non-student (which the landlord required) but as a "mature, single, adult" working full-time.

After 6 months of living in a local motel room previously, I was required to vacate the motel room so the motel owner could collect summer customer rates. I had no bedding, towels, sidetable or lamp, no kitchenware, etc. In June '21, with lockdowns in place for Ontario retailers, I was unable to purchase "non-essentials" in-store. Only 2 stores in Owen Sound, both Surplus Liquidators, sold basic, cheap bedding and one store sold an $11, assemble- it- yourself fan.

I didn't have a credit card so was unable to buy online.
