Billy Bishop Museum and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 6, will be hosting a free public event from the Owen Sound Legion for the 22nd Annual Honouring Our Local Veterans Ceremony (HOLV) on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
This year eight veterans from Grey and Bruce counties who have served and sacrificed for their country will be recognized. To date this program has honoured the service of over 200 First World War, Second World War and Korean War, Cold War and UN Peacekeeping Mission veterans from Grey and Bruce counties.
The ceremony is a free public event to show our local veterans support and learn about them this fall leading up to Remembrance Day.
This year’s honourees are:
Able Seaman Audrey Chester Coultis, Royal Canadian Navy, a Second World War veteran who sailed with the Atlantic Coast Command, Operations, North West Atlantic based in Halifax.
Leading Aircraftman Elwood Moore, Royal Canadian Air Force, a Radar Technician attached to 68 Squadron RAF, stationed in Swansea, South Wales during the Second World War.
Private Harry George Tucker, Royal Regiment of Canada, a technical storeman in the Signal Section, one of 272 fatal casualties of the Royals on August 19, 1942, during the Dieppe Raid.
James (Jim) Cohen, Royal Canadian Regiment, a wireless operator during the Korean War.
Aircraftwoman Joan Mavis Cracknell, Royal Canadian Air Force – Women’s Division, was a wireless operator who received messages in morse code from naval ships in the Pacific theatre.
Master Warrant Officer Kenneth Surridge, Canadian Armed Forces, with 6 tours including Bosnia and Afghanistan over a 35 year career in the Armed Forces he is an Infantry man through and through.
Chief Warrant Officer Lawrence Victor James Surridge, Canadian Armed Forces, enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in 1973 and would serve for 36 years with tours in Cyprus, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, spent one year in El Gorah, Egypt.
Master Warrant Officer Wayne Kennie, Canadian Armed Forces, with over 27 years of service MWO Kennie was deployed to Cyprus, Bosnia and Afghanistan.
