"Got it. Got it. Need it. Got it.” You likely have to be a certain age (like mine) to understand that these are the words of a card collector opening a fresh pack.
This weekend Owen Sound will see its first Card and Collectible Show and Sale, and whether you want to enjoy the nostalgia or you have collections to sell or complete, we think you're going to enjoy this.
Only a collector can understand the idea of “need” that comes from the thrill of the hunt – whether it is Pokemon cards, fossils, action figures, Owen Sound memorabilia, Lego or comic books.
The event will be at St. Andrew's Church hall, 800 block of 1st Avenue West, Saturday, Nov. 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is a non-perishable food item, or $2.
Jeff Caldwell (yes, the recent council candidate) and his friend David Steffen are hosting the show. The two discovered several years ago that they had a lot in common, including young sons – and Lego.
David found out he was going to be a father on the morning of his 40th birthday, and he knew that children grow up really fast. He didn't want to take family time for granted, but to be really involved with Mason and be a positive influence and role model.
Mason is now 4 1/2 – he can't read, but he can follow a LEGO instruction manual!
David has been collecting most of his life, and has had various different collections over the years – Hot Wheels, militaria, retro games. It’s mostly about the hunt for him, and he has sold his collections a few times.
“I’m a real local history buff, honestly,” he says, “I have a great collection of local bottles, Taylor & Pringle, Bishop & Pringle, Taylor Soda.”
As Jeff and David's sons have come to “Lego age”, the fathers have seen a lot of interest. David just recently started a Lego Facebook group as well for locals that want to share ideas, buy and sell.
The show and sale on Saturday is your opportunity to show off your own collection, add to it, and meet other enthusiasts. There are still a few tables left – for information email [email protected].
