Grey County Clothing Swap is hosting a kids’ toy and book swap Saturday, Nov. 26, to help parents find gently used gifts for their kids this Christmas season.

They're trying something a bit different this holiday season and instead of swapping clothes, the local group is inviting folks to bring gently used toys and books to swap before Christmas this year.

The Kid’s Toy and Book Swap is happening at the Community Incubator, at 279 10th St. E. from noon to 4:00 p.m.

gifts 2998593“As a parent, I know how toys and books can accumulate”, says Kel Smith, the swap organizer. “Toys get thrown in boxes and forgotten about, books get pushed to the back of shelves – everyone has items that they don’t use anymore that still have lots of life left in them. This swap is a chance to clear out some space in the house while also getting some Christmas shopping done.”

This is the fourth swap hosted by Grey County Clothing Swap, although this is the first time the group has branched away from just swapping wearable items. At previous events, the group has successfully helped rehome hundreds of items of clothing, some even new with tags, keeping items out of the landfill and providing a free way for people to shop for something new.

Even items that aren’t claimed are donated to local charities that will further distribute the items to those in need. Now they’re hoping to do the same with books and toys while helping parents keep some money in their wallets during the holiday season.

To participate in the swap, folks can simply bring their gently used toys and books to the Community Incubator anytime between noon and 4:00 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to help sort the items that are donated and then participants can browse through the other items that have been donated to pick some new items to take home. Donations are encouraged but not required and there’s no fee to participate.

If you have items that you’d like to donate but can’t make it to the event, you can reach out to Kel Smith directly at [email protected] or get in touch through Facebook.
