Sunday September 27 will be an auspicious day...er, night. The lunar eclipse begins here at 8:11 pm and peaks (the moon will be totally obscured) at 10:47 pm. Come join your Owen Sound neighbours from 8:00 on in Owen Heights Park to celebrate.
If that's a bit late for some of your kids, you can make this model to demonstrate why it happens.
You know that the Moon revolves around the Earth while the Earth is spinning around the sun.
Usually the three things aren't lined up, but during a solar or lunar eclipse they are, and that's when the magic happens.
This one shows that the sun is in a direct line with the Earth and Moon, so it casts the shadow of the Earth onto the Moon, and eventually (at 10:47 pm) covers it completely.
This one shows the three in line but in a different formation. Because of the apparent size of the moon, it exactly covers the disc of the sun, blocking it out. That's a solar eclipse and then next one visible in our area won't be until August 21, 2017. It's only a partial tho, like the one we saw here last October.
No special equipment is needed to view a lunar eclipse. Consider bringing a hot drink, lawn chair or blanket, warm clothing, and a pair of binocs tho there will be binocs to share and they arent necessary. And let's all hope for clear skies that night!
