From Grey Bruce Pride:
*****
We would like to share our collective 2S-LGBTQQIAP+ community events during Pride Month.
We also recognize that this is Indigenous History Month, and here at Grey Bruce Pride are proud to say that half of our community group members are Indigiqueer individuals and it is important to us to continue to let our Two-Spirit Peoples guide our way.
We demonstrate this in our Owen Sound Parade to ensure that they literally lead our parade.
Many people find the commonly-used acronym to describe out community overwhelming. We feel it's important to note that each one of the letters acknowledged fought hard through oppression to be recognized and many are only just beginning to be embraced by society.
We also acknowledge that there is a dash between 2S and the remainder of the acronym as not all Two Spirit Peoples consider themselves part of the queer community (as it is an ancient spiritual identity, with its first written record of 900 BCE); however, as they do not fit within the heteronormative, cisgender societal norms, we bring them under our Queer Umbrella yet separate them with a dash, to acknowledge this distinction.
It is important to ensure 2S comes first in our acronym as an act of reconciliation and acknowledgment of them being the first peoples and leaders of these lands.
