Across Canada, thousands of blood and plasma donors are needed to fill every open appointment from now through the end of summer to ensure there is an acceptable level of blood and plasma products to meet ongoing patient needs.
Donor behaviour changed during the pandemic, and fewer people are donating regularly now.
Attendance is lagging at blood and plasma donor centres.
Major events have impacted various communities across the country, and we know that donating hasn’t been top of mind for a lot of people. We can’t pause the need for blood. We are asking people to prioritize blood and plasma donation and help fill 150,000 open appointments before September.
We also need to build a more diverse donor base to meet complex and underserved patient needs. Blood from donors of the same or similar ethnic background as the recipient is less likely to cause complications. Achieving greater diversity in our blood system is particularly important for patients who need regular transfusion therapy, including those with sickle cell disease, cancer, thalassemia, or bleeding disorders.
If you haven’t donated in a while, or you’ve always thought about giving it a try, now is the time to book an appointment and make donating blood or plasma part of your summer plans.
If you aren’t able to donate, you can help by encouraging others to book an appointment and share the attached social media tiles on your platforms to raise awareness for the need for blood right now and always.
The greatest human connection happens when you give a part of yourself to make life better for others. Whether you donate this week or next month, your contribution ensures patients in Canada receive lifesaving support where and when they need it. You can make a lasting impact on the lives of others. One hour of your time donating blood, plasma or platelets has a positive impact that can last a lifetime.
Visit blood.ca, use the GiveBlood app, or call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to find and book an appointment at a donor centre near you. Often there are last minute cancellations so please continue to check online at blood.ca up until the day of the event.
