Did you know that loneliness and lack of social ties are some of the most difficult issues facing those at risk of homelessness and poverty? Loneliness can be so devastating that it hinders any sense of feeling hopeful. Safe 'N Sound believes that in order for any good work to be accomplished in someone's life, the issue of loneliness must be acknowledged and addressed.
This is why Safe 'N Sound is much needed in Owen Sound. Through our programming at The Space (310 8th St. East) we intentionally facilitate social ties and a sense of belonging. We are a community within a community where participants feel welcome. Here folks can access support, advocacy, referral, and basic needs such as laundry facilities, showers, computers, lunch, and more. We also strongly encourage andfacilitate creativity– such as art and music. Safe 'N Sound aspires to provide a safe place where all who come can experience dignity and find day to day hope.
Its hard work, often unrecognized. Funding is always scarce, but the feedback from Participants testifies to the effectiveness of our work:
"Safe 'N Sound is my home! It's my family!"
"I came with nothing, and Safe 'N Sound helped get me back on my feet."
"Safe N Sound has been good to me, and now I want to give back." ( a volunteer)
"I like it at The Space because the people here care about each other. It's a safe place, where I don't have to worry about being treated disrespectfully."
Safe 'N Sound also operates an after-hours emergency phone line through which those from Grey Bruce, who find themselves in a housing crisis, can receive emergency shelter in local motels. To accomplish our goals, we continue to work in partnership with other supporting community services.
