"Seeking Afar-speaking person". So read the Facebook post, and I knew just why the poster was looking.
Afar is a language spoken by some people in the horn of Africa – parts of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti. It is the language spoken by a family who will be coming to Owen Sound this week, sponsored by St. Andrew's PresbyterianChurch.
We do not imagine it is a common language in Grey-Bruce, but one of the most remarkable parts of the sponsorship experience thus far has been discovering the wealth of languages, skills, resources and deep generosity of the communities around us.
If you speak Afar or know someone who does, please contact Dick Hibma at 519-377-2095.
If you want to know more about the sponsorship of refugees, or the families coming to our area, check here.
