Grey Roots Museum & Archives is pleased to unveil the Grey County Historic Communities online mapping project. The application identifies the smaller historic communities on both County and local roads. Users can explore pictures from the past read descriptions about the settlements. The project pays tribute to communities that at one time played an important role serving settlers in the area.
"There are 121 Grey County communities are profiled on the interactive map," said Grey County Clerk Sharon Vokes. "We hope users find it both informative and fun to browse."
The purpose of the project is to provide information online to Archives researchers, the public, and "genealogical tourists" interested in tracing their ancestors' roots back to Grey County's early settlements.
Online mapping is the second stage of the Grey County Historic Community signage project. Last summer, brown signs were installed on County roads to mark smaller and lesser-known historic communities throughout Grey County.
Archives staff and volunteers identified communities to include in the project based on evidence they at one time provided:
General store
Mill
Blacksmith Shop
School
Post Office
Structure housing fraternal organization (ie Orange Lodge, Masons, Knights of Columbus)
Church or other religious meeting house
Cemetery/cenotaph
Community centre
Hotel/Tavern
You can find the Grey County Historic Communities online mapping project at the Grey County Maps Portal, https://geo.grey.ca, as well as through Grey Roots Museum & Archives' website www.greyroots.com.
The application was created as a joint project between Grey Roots and Grey County's IT Department.
