Hear the irish music next Sunday.
The Pratie Oaten Irish Festival takes place Sunday, September 25 at the Grey Roots Museum and Archives from noon until 5 p.m.
Grey Roots Museum is dedicating this year's Pratie Oaten Irish Festival to the memory of Michael O'Kelly, Irish traditional musician, who was such a big part of the annual event's early history.
Pratie Oaten will also include performances from Scatter the Cats, Nonie Crete and Eugene Rea, the Fiddlefern Session Players and Dance Callers Collective and others.
Historical displays throughout the museum's Moreston Heritage Village will include threshing machine demonstrations, fanning mill demonstrations, basketry, wagon rides, food vendors, and of course, Pratie Oaten samples available throughout the day in the Log Cabin, with cookies in the Log House and apple juice at the Farm House. Kiwanis Food Truck will also be providing food services.
Michael O'Kelly was a regular performer at many museum events beginning in the 1980s, until moving back to Ireland eight years ago. With his tin whistles, button accordion and wooden flute, he was always an inspiration and mentor to the local traditional music community. Michael died in Ireland earlier this year.
As part of this year's annual Pratie Oaten event, many of Michael's musical friends and former colleagues from Grey-Bruce will perform Irish music in tribute to Michael's memory and influence. Hosted by members of Scatter the Cats, the music will again be in the huge, historic Grey Roots barn this year, where Pratie Oaten performances began years ago, and which has been relocated to the new site and recently refurbished.
Join the Fiddlefern musicians also for outdoor dancing at the gazebo, from 1:30 until 3 p.m.
