- Hub special
In recognition of Owen Sound hosting the world's largest plastic duck this week, and to inspire those who would like us to become a Blue Community, the Hub is pleased to share excerpts from Liz Zetlin's musings on her own Plastic Challenge for the month of July.
We encourage you to share your own photos and practical ideas to reduce plastic in our landfill, public lands and water.
Day 1....
"Wouldn't it be cool if we brought our own bags and containers to the grocery store and emptied all the food wrapped and boxed in plastic into them, while standing at the check out. I did a trial run at Metro and no one flinched."
"Day 2 of plastic challenge - morning walk along the harbour - 35 single-use still lifes and 6446 steps. Could have taken a lot more of these photos . ."
"Day 3 plastic challenge - Bleeding Carrot - Starting immediately, we will give $0.25 off any take-out beverage purchase when the customer brings their own cup or container. Please consider carrying re-usable cups for coffee and smoothies/juices."
"Plastic Challenge Day 5. Please help me name a new award for people who use refillable plastic water bottles. Today when I was riding my bike on the Tom Thomson Trail, I met Judy and Randy Wright, who had ridden in from Leith on ottheir horses Emily and Moonlight. We started chatting and then Judy had to refill her water bottle, so I followed her into the Bayshore, where there are no refill stations, so she had to use the taps in the washroom. Then I met Brenda, who was cultivating the CMHA Snack and Go gardens. She had her refillable right there on the raised bed. She also had an amazing bike that carried all her garden tools, and even jugs of water, when she needed to water the garden beds. So I decided I wanted to create an award for people who use refillable bottles. But I need a catchy name. So far I've only got "Back to the Tap" award. Any other ideas? Today's award goes to Judy, Randy and Brenda."
Thanks for sharing these photos and inspiring neighbours Liz. More to come!
