green fireThe Bruce Grey Woodlands Association (BGWA) is pleased to present a special event, "An Afternoon about Aldo Leopold," on Saturday, October 14, 1-4 pm, at the Bruce County Museum theatre in Southampton.

Tickets are available online at www.bgwa.ca.

This special event features a screening of the documentary Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time, which explores the extraordinary career of legendary American author, philosopher, scientist, ecologist, forester, conservationist, and environmentalist, Aldo Leopold. It is the first ever full-length documentary film about Leopold and explores his extraordinary career and enduring influence, tracing how he shaped the modern conservation movement and continues to inspire projects that connect people and the land.

According to BGWA president Chris Vander Hout, Leopold was particularly influential in the development of modern environmental ethics and in the movement for wilderness conservation.

"Leopold's ethics of nature and wildlife preservation had a profound impact on the environmental movement, with his eco-centric or holistic ethics regarding land," Vander Hout says.

In addition to the screening of Green Fire, the event will include commentaries by two eminent conservationists, Eric Davies and Doug Larson.

Davies spent 20 years studying natural history, ecology, conservation and forestry at several prestigious Canadian colleges and universities. He grew up next to the Saugeen First Nation in Southampton and the country sides of Grey, Bruce and Wentworth Counties and has a deep appreciation for the traditional knowledge of indigenous people and farmers. He has a tremendous love for nature and is dedicated to helping find, protect, and restore the landscapes and biodiversity of Ontario.

Larson retired from the University of Guelph seven years ago after a 35-year career of teaching and research. He is best known for the discovery of the ancient forests of the Niagara Escarpment. Four books and 130 research papers form the core of his academic career. Larson is also a songwriter and recorder whose material has covered many environmental and political topics including homage to Aldo Leopold.

The Bruce Grey Woodlands Association promotes healthy forests and ecosystems in Bruce and Grey Counties through education, recreation and sustainable management practices.
