November 1, 2017 was Take Your Kid To Work day (TYKTW). This is an annual program in which Grade 9 students spend the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, friend or volunteer, experiencing the world of work. At OSDSS almost 200 grade 9's students spent the day at their chosen workplace experiencing life in a world outside of school.
The program began in 1994, and continues to be a popular career readiness program in Ontario. OSDSS also hosted some Grade 9's. Emerson Gottscheu a grade 9 student from Saugeen District Secondary School spent the day with his father Al Gottscheu, a Hospitality Program teacher in the very busy OSDSS cafeteria!
Emerson says, "He enjoyed the experience and had no idea how much work went into feeding so many people. And how busy his father was with students getting ready for lunch!" Students in the Hospitality Program gain credit and food preparation training. Emerson had a full day experiencing the teacher's role in making it all happen!
