The local Beth Ezekiel Synagogue is in need of an upgrade to their security system. To raise funds for these improvements, a fundraising walk is being held Sunday September 30th, at 10:30 a.m.
Earlier this year, the Synagogue was the target of hate graffiti. After an appeal for the public's assistance, police were able to apprehend a suspect, who has been charged. Many in the Jewish community, and the larger Owen Sound community, were shaken by the vandalism. This incident highlighted the need for upgrades to the community's security system. Such expenditure requires additional funding, and is the reason for the upcoming fundraiser.
"Improvements to the synagogue's security system aren't just about us, it's about keeping the whole community safe," notes Shawna Katz, long-time member of the congregation. In August of 2015, security footage provided by the synagogue to the police helped identify individuals involved in a devastating string of arsons.
Starting at 10:30 a.m., participants will begin their route at the Synagogue, at 313 11th St E. They will then walk to and along the water until Kelso Beach Park, an expected route of 2 km. Those who are able will then turn around and make the same trek back, for a total of 4 km; others will be shuttled as needed. There will be a celebratory gathering at Beth Ezekiel following the walk.
Pledge forms are available upon request from the synagogue. Donations gratefully accepted by the following means:
