Please join us on Monday, December 10th in the Owen Sound & North Grey Public Library’s boardroom for Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign! We will be writing letters from 9:30am to 1:00pm, to help government officials to release people imprisoned for expressing their opinion (called “prisoners of conscience” by Amnesty), stop the use of torture, commute death sentences and end other human rights abuses.

You can sign up beforehand on the Amnesty International Webpage, RSVP to our Facebook Event, or just show up on Monday, ready to write! If you are unable to attend, please consider writing a letter to bring it to the Library on Monday, before 1:00, or mail one yourself! “Every year around International Human Rights Day on December 10th, hundreds of thousands of people around the world send a letter or an e-mail on behalf of someone they’ve never met.

Women human rights defenders are under threat worldwide – so under threat that Amnesty International has chosen to focus all of this year’s Write for Rights cases on courageous women peacefully advocating for human rights. The space for civil society to peacefully advocate for human rights is shrinking the world over. And this space is shrinking exponentially for women human rights defenders, whose advocacy may challenge patriarchal power structures or social norms.

Despite the risk of harassment and violence, courageous women human rights defenders are at the forefront of social movements across the world.
