Driver Training at West Hill is an extra-curricular subject for forty-six willing pupils. Under the direction of Mr. W.R. Walker, the twenty-five hours of class-room instruction, including psycho-physical tests, films, guest-speakers and lectures, concluded April 14th. Behind-the-wheel instruction began the following week with Messrs. Walker and Mathewson in charge.
It was not decided until the fall term was well underway that this opportunity for driver training would be offered, and, as a result the classes were late getting started. In spite of this it is expected that all pupils who reached age sixteen before May 1st will complete the course this June and get their certificates.
The car used for the lessons is a 1961 Valiant with a manual shift and dual controls supplied with the the compliments of Tom's Garage.
It was felt by the Board of Education that a person who was competent with this type of transmission could easily master the automatic type car.
It is hoped that this course will prove successful and that the students will graduate to become safe, courteous drivers.
