Does your schoolyard support physical activity and learning about nature? You can be part of a check-up on the health of Ontario’s schoolyards.
Schoolyards Count! is a citizen-science project asking school communities to audit their schoolyards. It is available in French and English, and can be done by school councils, classes, eco-clubs, or individuals, and the results will provide a comprehensive picture of schoolyard quality across Ontario.
The audit tool looks at different aspects of the schoolyard environment, including the presence of trees, gardens and naturalized areas; structures and pavement markings; and whether it supports safe, active transportation. It also asks about the time students spend playing and learning outside, and the resources that support healthy schoolyards.
