On Monday, May 13, Alexandra Community School and East Ridge Community School put their mathematical skills to the test at Zehrs during the Owen Sound Annual Shop with a Cop competition.
The fifteen participants were divided into teams of three and each team was coached by an officer from the Owen Sound Police Services. Their challenge – collect as close to $100 worth of groceries as possible without going over. The five teams were encouraged by Zehrs staff and by members of the Optimist Club, as they raced up and down the store aisles filling their carts with non-perishable food items.
To be clear, this was not just about fun and numeracy practice. All of the food items collected were loaded into a truck and sent to the Salvation Army Food Bank to help those in need in our community.
The winning team are Sydney from Alexandra, Liliana and Olivia from East Ridge, and their coach, Constable Peddle. The winning team collected $98.41 worth of groceries.
This project is a special partnership involving Zehrs, the Optimist Club, Owen Sound Police, the Salvation Army and local schools. Alexandra and East Ridge schools would like to thank these partners for providing this opportunity for learning, fun and a chance to show our students the importance of giving back to our community.
