Today I visited the Cairn and sat for at least 30 minutes grieving about events of the last week and the history of obvious racism that has led to this moment. I have remained silent until now, not because I didn’t care, but because I wasn’t sure how to express my feelings I was just going to post a picture of the Cairn but a stranger introduced herself and took this photo for me.
Even as a Black man my life has been relatively free of racist content so I cannot share stories of personal events which can compare to the racial injustice suffered by so many. I am however a man who is sensitive to others and have seen their struggles, felt their pain and and support their struggle for equality .
The anguish we see on the faces of demonstrators is the result of generations of racist inequality. The death of Mr. Floyd is just the final straw and his name along with the “ Black Lives Matter “ chants are the battle cries of all who are saying IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE and I truly believe that time has come. This time Blacks have been joined by people of all races and ages demanding that Canada and the US recognize the need to correct the injustices of the past and put a plan in place to make a meaningful step in the right direction.
Each voiced raised will have a positive impact. Let us not be distracted, let us stay strong in our resolve.
